Markus Schulz performed at Marquee on Friday. He’s awesome. In case you don’t know, Schulz is a German DJ and producer, founder of the Coldharbour Recordings EDM Label and the artist management company Schulz Music Group. Check out his personal site at www.markusschulz.com
We had the chance to spend five minutes with him after the show, when he talked about his DJ Times award for 2012's best DJ and his recent collaboration with Armin van Buuren. Here’s what he had to say:
Mr. Q: You’re back at Marquee where you were awarded DJ Times’ America’s Best DJ for 2012. How did it feel to receive that honor?
Markus: Well it’s is a huge honor, of course. However it’s not something that has or will affect or alter the way I do things week-by-week. You have to keep wins like that in proportion. It’s always nice to accomplish, but you can’t let it define you. Only the music can do that. So I don’t wake up mornings thinking “hey I’ve been voted America’s Best DJ.” When I wake up I tend to think ‘what hotel is this?’, ‘where can I get a good cup of tea?’, ‘what time’s the flight?’ and ‘where am I playing tonight already?’, and in that rough order!
Mr. Q: ASOT (A State of Trance) recently reached 600 episodes. What’s it been like to be a contributor to the milestone and how has the show impacted EDM?
Markus: This year’s milestone is maybe that much more special to me than previous ASOT ones even. Armin (van Buuren) and I got together back in December together to record the theme for it. It’s called ‘The Expedition’ and I’m really happy with the way it turned out. It has all the key elements of a classic ASOT theme I think! I’m looking forward immensely to playing it at the events and watching what damage it does.
In terms of how the show’s impacted EDM, well almost immeasurably I’d say. It is now all but synonymous with the term ‘trance radio’.
Mr. Q: Speaking of shows, what’s in store for Global DJ Broadcast in 2013?
Markus: In short: more of the same. I’m really happy with where the show is now. I think it’s reflective both of what I play and the wider world of EDM, which is what I always wanted for it. We did the World Tour: Best of 2012 CD just before Christmas as a kind of ‘cap a great year’ release and the feedback that we had off that - especially in terms of the unique approach to the mixing of its ‘round the world’ disc - has been amazing.
Mr. Q: What’s on your playlist right now?
